Governor Schwarzenegger is also committed to ensuring that every four-year old child in a low decile school has the opportunity to attend a high quality preschool program.
His plan includes $50 million to expand access to preschool for four-year olds in low-performing school districts. This investment is the first step of a three-year phase-in of an initiative to expand preschool opportunities to children most in need.
This expansion will also include quality reforms to promote family literacy. The proposal also leverages other general fund dollars that provide child care, making half-day preschool programs more helpful to working parents. In addition, there is an increase of $50 million in one-time funds in the Child Care Facilities Revolving Fund to address facilities needs for preschool expansion.
